Interstate 105 Oregon

Routing

Interstate 105 is an east-west spur freeway connecting Oregon 99 and Interstate 5 via Oregon 126 in the Eugene metropolitan area. It begins at the intersection of Washington/Jefferson Streets and 6th/7th Avenues west of downtown, then crosses the Washington-Jefferson Bridge over the Willamette River. Interstate 105 (Eugene-Springfield Highway) then turns due east at the Delta Highway interchange, following the north bank of the river until it ends at Interstate 5. The freeway continues east of Interstate 5 as Oregon 126.

Interstate 105 and Oregon 126 share pavement along the Pacific-Willamette Highway between downtown Eugene and Interstate 5. While Oregon 126 is an important through route, the connection to Interstate 5 from downtown Eugene is vital. A typical rainy day frames the freeway, which is generally four to six lanes wide and carries a significant amount of traffic. Photo taken 04/01/05.

History

Construction of this east-west freeway, which includes the bridge over the Willamette River on its western end, started in the early 1960s. Interstate 105 was fully opened to traffic in 1970. According to Interstate 50th Anniversary: The Story of Oregonís Interstates, Interstate 105 was not a controversial route at all, unlike the other proposed Interstate spurs in Oregon that were never built (Interstate 305 and Interstate 505).1

Planned Improvements

Project #10349 will add an auxiliary lane to Interstate 105 in both directions between Mileposts 0.89 to 3.95, starting in 2005. The project is estimated to cost $15 million.2

Interstate 105 and Oregon 126 westbound cross the Willamette River via the Washington-Jefferson Bridge. The final exit is actually a signalized intersection with Oregon 99 and Oregon 126, which follows the 6th Avenue/7th Avenue couplet through downtown Eugene. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Westbound Interstate 105/Oregon 126 remains on a viaduct as the freeway approaches Oregon 99. Oregon 99 and Business Oregon 126 travel east into downtown Eugene, while Oregon 99 north and Oregon 126 west angle northwest toward Florence and Junction City. Photo taken 04/01/05.
The final offramp from westbound Interstate 105 is to northbound Oregon 99 to Junction City and westbound Oregon 126 to Florence. Continue straight ahead to make the connection to Oregon 99 south/Business Oregon 126 east into downtown Eugene as well as Jefferson Street southbound. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Westbound Interstate 105 reaches its end as the traffic signal for Oregon 99 comes into view. The freeway changes into southbound Jefferson Street after the traffic signal; Oregon 99/Business 126 follow 7th Avenue east into downtown Eugene. Photo taken 04/01/05.
A left turn connects to southbound Oregon 99 and eastbound Business Oregon 126, 7th Avenue. Photo taken 04/01/05.
There is no END shield for Interstate 105 westbound. Jefferson Street continues south toward the Lane County Fairgrounds. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Perspective from Oregon 99 southbound/Oregon 126 eastbound (7th Avenue)
Southbound Oregon 99 and eastbound Oregon 126 approach the junction with Interstate 105, which offers a fast route to Interstate 5 and to Springfield via the Eugene-Springfield Highway. Photo taken 04/01/05.
At the intersection of 7th Avenue and Washington Street, Oregon 99 and Oregon 126 split. Oregon 99 continues east along 7th Avenue into downtown Eugene, while Oregon 126 and Interstate 105 make a left onto the Eugene-Springfield Highway, which is a freeway that travels approximately four miles to meet Interstate 5 northeast of downtown. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Perspective from Oregon 99 northbound/Business Oregon 126 westbound (6th Avenue)
Oregon 99 and Business Oregon 126 follow 6th Avenue as they travel west through downtown Eugene. Toward the west end of downtown, Oregon 99 and Business 126 approach the junction with Interstate 105 east at the Washington Street interchange. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Use the right lane of 6th Avenue to transition onto Interstate 105 and Oregon 126 eastbound. Oregon 99 and Business Oregon 126 will continue west along 6th Avenue past the onramp to the freeway. This interchange marks the western terminus of Interstate 105. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Northbound Oregon 99 and westbound Oregon 126 (6th Avenue) reaches the ramp to eastbound Interstate 105 and Oregon 126. Oregon 99 and Oregon 126 continue west from here, passing under the Washington Jefferson Bridge viaduct without directly intersecting the freeway. Traffic on eastbound Business Oregon 126/southbound Oregon 99 intersect Interstate 105 at the 7th Avenue/Washington Street intersection. Photo taken 04/01/05.
An Oregon 99 pull through sign is posted on the viaduct as 6th Avenue passes under the lanes for eastbound Interstate 105/Oregon 126. The bridge for westbound Oregon 126/Interstate 105 is visible in the distance. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Perspective from Washington Street northbound
These overhead signs are posted on northbound Washington Street a few blocks south of 7th Avenue (Oregon 99 southbound and Business Oregon 126 eastbound). Washington Street transitions directly onto the eastbound lanes for Interstate 105. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Interstate 105 begins as Washington Street crosses the southbound lanes of Oregon 99 (7th Avenue). This photo looks north at Washington Street as it transitions onto the freeway after crossing 7th Avenue/Oregon 99 south. Seventh Avenue/Oregon 99 north is one block to the north, and it is accessible from Washington Street via the right lane. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Perspective from Interstate 105 eastbound
The Washington-Jefferson Bridge, which carries Interstate 105 and Oregon 126 over both northbound Oregon 99 (6th Avenue) and the Willamette River, connects with the Delta Highway on the north bank of the river. Photo taken 04/01/05.
At the north end of the Washington-Jefferson Bridge, Interstate 105 approaches the Delta Highway. Note that the pull-through sign reads "To Interstate 5" and not Interstate 105/Oregon 126 east. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Eastbound Interstate 105/Oregon 126 reaches the exit to Delta Highway; from here, Interstate 105 travels due east to meet Interstate 5. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Perspective from Delta Highway Southbound
The Delta Highway connects the Beltline Highway with Interstate 105. Here, southbound Delta Highway approaches its terminus at Interstate 105. The left lane connects directly to eastbound Interstate 105/Oregon 126 en route to Interstate 5 and Springfield, while the right lane connects directly onto westbound Interstate 105/Oregon 126 en route to downtown Eugene via the Washington Jefferson Bridge. Note that the signs here use Oregon 99/Business Oregon 126 rather than Interstate 105/Oregon 126 west. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Southbound Delta Highway reaches the transition ramp to Interstate 105/Oregon 126 west, which is signed here as Oregon 99/Business Oregon 126. Photo taken 04/01/05.
A rare standalone Interstate 105 shield (one of two we found anywhere in Eugene) points the way from the Delta Highway to eastbound Interstate 105 to Interstate 5. Oregon 126 is not mentioned. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Eastern Terminus - Interstate 5 - Eugene, Oregon
Perspective from Interstate 105/Oregon 126 East
After the Coburg Road interchange, Interstate 105/Oregon 126 eastbound approaches Exits 4A-B, Junction Interstate 5. The freeway will continue east of Interstate 5, but it only carries the Oregon 126 designation. Photo taken 04/01/05.
The only mainline Interstate 105 shield is located after the first approach signs to the Interstate 5 interchange. Interstate 105 and Oregon 126 are cosigned here, but they are temporary signs, since the highway is being widened to include an auxiliary lane. Prior to the start of construction in 2005, this Interstate 105 shield assembly had the state name. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Eastbound Interstate 105/Oregon 126 reach Exit 4A, Junction Interstate 5 south to Roseburg. The next transition ramp is a left exit to Interstate 5 north to Salem and Portland. The two main lanes will continue east on Oregon 126 en route to Springfield. Photo taken 04/01/05.

The next northbound interchange is for Exit 194, Junction Interstate 105 west and Junction Oregon 126 west/east. The Willamette River Bridge is notable in that there are two spans, the old bridge and the currently used bridge. The old Interstate 5 bridge is still standing (as of April 2005), and did not appear to be in use. Photo taken 04/01/05.
Northbound Interstate 5 reaches Exit 194A, Junction Oregon 126 east to Springfield, Bend, and Prineville. Oregon 126 was at one point U.S. 126. The highway was downgraded to a state route when the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) determined that all "intra-state" U.S. routes should be decommissioned. U.S. 126 fit this criteria as all of its routing was within the state of Oregon. There were some U.S. 126 shields still in place in 1990; they are all gone now. Photo taken 04/01/05.
The next ramp in this large interchange is a loop ramp to Exit 194B, Junction Interstate 105/Oregon 126 west to downtown Eugene. Oregon 126 continues west from Eugene to the coast, culminating at Florence, where it meets U.S. 101 the coast highway. Photo taken 04/01/05.
