Interstate 380 Pennsylvania

 

Routing

Initially signed as Interstate 81E, Interstate 380 serves the Pocono Mountain Region, while also providing a connector to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with Interstate 80 and New Jersey/New York City bound traffic. Interstate 380 originally carried east and westbound cardinal directions in its routing to benefit travelers from New York City to/from Scranton. As the highway is orientated more in a north-south fashion, this directional flaw was remedied to coincide with the conversion of exit numbers in Pennsylvania from sequential to mile based. The change occurred by 2001.

Most of Interstate 380 was resurfaced between 1996 and 2001. Original concrete was removed and new pavement is now in place.

History

Work began on Interstate 380 in 1961 and was finished by 1976.1 The highway was initially designated Interstate 81S and then later Interstate 81E.

Southern Terminus - Interstate 80 - Pocono Summit, Pennsylvania

With the original button copy sign still in place in 2005 but gone by 2006, the original guide sign features a reflective exit tab for Exits 1B-A. The new sign features an "END Interstate 380" assembly similar to the signs typically found in New Jersey. Throughout northern Pennsylvania, local control cities are used throughout the Interstate system. Interstate 80 features Hazelton here for the westbound direction. The city itself is actually located six miles to the south but is close enough to warrant mentioning due to the nearby junction of Interstate 80 with Interstate 81. The practice of using control points that reflect a nearby Interstate junction is not uncommon. For instance, Interstate 95 features Benson, North Carolina because of the approximately to Interstate 40. One mile from the terminus of Interstate 380, original button copy signs adorned this sign bridge in 2005 for the lane partitioning between Exits 1B/A, but the signs were replaced by July 2006. Note the old format of black on yellow blocks on the associated guide panels. This was the standard for signing "Exit-only" situations in the 1960s and 1970s in Pennsylvania. The end of Interstate 380. Exit 1A departs to the right for Interstate 80 west. 17 miles beyond the ramp is the Pocono Turnpike interchange of Interstate 476. Otherwise, traffic is defaulted onto Interstate 80 eastbound. The city of Stroudsberg is just a thirteen mile drive east of this interchange. This mileage sign provides the distance to the next three exits, all of which serve the Pocono Mountains: Exit 299, Junction Pennsylvania 715, Tannersville and Big Pocono State Park; Exit 298, Junction Pennsylvania 611, Scotrun and Mt. After Exit 299, Junction Pennsylvania 715, Tannersville and Big Pocono State Park, a second mileage sign again shows the mileage to the next two exits, both of which serve the Pocono Mountains: Exit 298, Junction Pennsylvania 611, Scotrun and Mt. Pocono and Exit 293, Junction Interstate 380 north. The distance to Blakeslee (17 miles via Exit 284, Junction Pennsylvania 115) is also provided. More Pocono exits are still to come via either freeway. On westbound Interstate 80, the next three exits (Exits 284, 277, and 274) all serve the region, while northbound Interstate 380 (Exits 3, 8, and 13) also serve the Poconos. Photo taken by AARoads (09/01/05).
Westbound Interstate 80 approaches the junction with Interstate 380, which was formerly known as Interstate 81S between 1958 and 1964 and as Interstate 81E between 1964 until 1973.1 The right lane connects to northbound Interstate 380, while the left two lanes carry Interstate 80 west toward Cleveland. PennDOT prefers Clearview font on the newest guide signage posted Pennsylvania; these signs were placed in 2001 or 2002. Photo taken by AARoads (09/01/05).

At the top of the hill, Interstate 80 and Interstate 380 split. A set of old button copy signs remains in use; the Interstate 380 shield is so faded that it can't be read from a distance. It is likely that these will be replaced with new Clearview signs soon. From here, Interstate 380 begins its northward trek as Interstate 80 continues westward toward Youngstown, Ohio. Perspective from Interstate 80 east
Access to Interstate 380 north (shown as west here) is granted to Interstate 80 eastbound travelers. The nearby Interstate 476/Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange with Interstate 80 receives a substantial amount of usage by ski resort traffic during the colder months, thus warranting access to Interstate 380 north into the Pocono Mountains. A few pings and some fading withstanding, these original signs have withstood time well in their 30 plus years of service. Northbound Interstate 380 reaches Exit 3, Junction Pennsylvania 940, Pocono. The highway continues north to Scranton, where it meets Interstate 84 and ultimately Interstate 81. The exit numbers were renumbered in 2001 when Pennsylvania shifted from sequential to mileage-based exit numbering. Exit numbers now begin at the southern (former eastern) end of Interstate 380 rather than the former western (now northern) end. Photo taken by AARoads (09/01/05).

Northern Terminus - Interstate 81 - Dunmore, Pennsylvania
Perspective from Interstate 84 west/Interstate 380 north
This guide signage, newly installed at the time of this video capture, was the first to show that U.S. 6 overlaps with Interstate 81 between Exits 187 and 191. Interstate 84 and 380 saw expansion and redesign as part of the massive construction project associated with the U.S. 6 Carbondale freeway. The freeway now carries six lanes between Exit 2 and Interstate 81. Thus this sign bridge shows that two lanes are available for traffic to both directions of Interstate 81. Historical View: Well before the U.S. 6 freeway to Carbondale was introduced to the Interstate 81/84/380 confluence, the three interstates came together in a simple tri-level stack interchange. This video capture shows the northbound Interstate 81 perspective at the interchange before even one shovel of earth was turned. Perspective from Interstate 84 frontage road westbound
The city of Scranton is set in a valley between Bald Mountain and the Poconos. This photograph, taken from a nearby frontage road, shows Interstate 84 and 380 as they enter the rebuilt Interstate 81/U.S. 6 stack interchange.
