Interstate 229 is a loop freeway serving the downtown area of St. Joseph, while its parent Interstate 29 avoids the downtown area. A portion of Interstate 229 is a double-decker freeway. There is a business loop for Interstate 29 that also serves downtown St. Joseph via local roads.

The final exit on Interstate 229 south is the junction with Missouri Secondary Route A (40th Street) at Exit 1C. The exit number is omitted on this sign assembly.
