Future Interstate 777 North Carolina

Interstate 777 is a proposed designation for the freeway along U.S. 421 extending west from I-40 and Salem Parkway in Winston-Salem to I-77 near Hamptonville in North Carolina. Carolina Core officials sought Congressional support in April 2024 for the upgrading this stretch of U.S. 421 to a future Interstate. The designation is meant to prompt economic growth (Skipper, 2024).

High Priority Corridor additions specified in the BUILD America 250 Act (2026) Under Section 1303, the Designation of High Priority Corridor on National Highway System, include:

"(104) United States Route 421 from Wilkesboro, North Carolina to Winston-Salem, North Carolina."
(b) DESIGNATION as FUTURE Interstate--Section 1105(e)(5) of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (Public Law 102-240) is amended--

(2) in subparagraph (C)(i) by adding at the end of the following: "The route referred to in subsection (c)(104) is designated as Interstate Route I-777."

Created in 2018, the Carolina Core initiative of the Piedmont Triad Partnership (PTP) is the proponent of the Interstate corridor. PTP is a leadership organization promoting economic growth by coordinating with and advocating to political officials and regional leads in the Triad area. Carolina Core successfully worked with local, state and federal government officials for the designation of U.S. 421 between Greensboro and Sandford as the Future Interstate 685 corridor (Hill, 2024).
