Business Loop I-75 - Indian River
Proposed Business Route
A business route from I-75 was suggested for Indian River by Cheboygan County resident Carl Muscott in 2015. The 3.4 mile route would take M-68 west from Exit 310 and old U.S. 27 (Straits Highway) north to Exit 313. Muscott pitched the idea to the Downtown Development Authority, State Rep. Lee Chatfield R-Levering and the Cheboygan County Road Commission. He suggested that a new business loop may encourage motorists to visit the community for dining, shopping, recreational activities and the Cross in the Woods Catholic Shrine point of interest (Cheboygan Daily Tribune, 2015).
The Cheboygan County Road Commission eventually discussed the possibility on June 2, 2016. Despite a petition garnering signatures from many Indian River business owners (Cheboygan Daily Tribune, 2016), the business loop cannot be signed unless MDOT accepts control of old U.S. 27 (Straights Highway), as all Interstate Business Routes in Michigan are a part of the state trunk line system.
