Interstate 465 Indiana
Routing
Interstate 465 is a complete beltway around Indianapolis, Indiana. A major renumbering occurred in 2002, when its northwest leg was renumbered as Interstate 865. Previously, this connector route was signed as part of Interstate 465, even though the connector route did not lie on the beltway itself. All non-Interstate routes were removed from within the beltway along the city streets of Indianapolis. This created a numbering headache, with U.S. 31, 36, 40, 52, 421 and Indiana 37, 67, all sharing pavement at some point with the nearly 60 mile circumferential highway. Multiplex signage is generally not shown with Interstate 465 reassurance shields, with mentionings on guide signage instead. A similar rerouting of city highway routes occurred in Montgomery, Alabama during the 1980s.
History
Interstate 465 construction began in 1959. Completion of the first segment of beltway followed in 1961, with total completion by 1970.1

Two miles west of the zero milepost and south parent junction, Interstates 74 and 465 eastbound enter the Exit 2A/B partial cloverleaf interchange. This junction marks the entry point of U.S. 31 northbound onto the Indianapolis Beltway. Exit 2B also serves the University of Indianapolis. Photo taken by Chris Patriarca (05/26/03). |

Just before Keystone Avenue is the one mile guide sign for Interstate 465/74. It is odd that even though Indiana does not use control cities for 3dis, they omit the control cities for Interstate 74 here (Peoria and Cincinnati). Photo taken 10/16/04. |
|
 |
To reduce confusion, or maybe to add to it, a special note is made on these guide signs that the exit serves both eastbound and westbound Interstate 465. Before its reconstruction, the signs on Interstate 70 eastbound on the Eastside at Interstate 465 also had similar notation for northbound and southbound Interstate 465. Photo taken 10/16/04. |

Finally, a guide sign with one of Interstate 74's control cities. This road level panel points out that exit 106 leads to Interstate 74 east toward Cincinnati. Photo taken 10/16/04. |

INDOT seems to have transitioned to assigning a single exit number to any interchanges that split off of a freeway at one point to later split off past the original gore. Here even though there are two separate ramps for Interstate 465/74, the exit is numbered as Exit 106, as opposed to Exit 106B (Westbound) and Exit 106A (Eastbound). The panel also looks odd since it is a single panel. Had this been MoDOT, that panel would have been two separate signs put next to each other each with their own exit tab and "EXIT ONLY" space. See the Interstate 270 and Interstate 255 guides for examples. Photo taken 10/16/04. |

At the top of the transition ramp, the left lane departs for eastbound Interstate 74 and Interstate 465 (outer), while the right lane connects to westbound Interstate 74 and Interstate 465 (inner). Photo taken 10/16/04. |

Six miles south of downtown, Exit 106 ramps for Interstate 74/465 depart to the right. Although Interstate 74 is carried by Interstate 465 around Indianapolis, the highway plays an important role connecting the capital city with Cincinnati, Ohio to the east and Peoria, Illinois, among other cities, to the west. One ramp carries traffic to Interstate 65 northbound at Exit 20 from Interstate 465 north. Note that this is a partial interchange with movements only allowed between the same direction (i.e. Interstate 465 north to Interstate 65 north, but not Interstate 465 north to Interstate 65 south). This centerline upcoming exits sign is posted just after Interstate 465 turns south from the eastern terminus of Interstate 865. Featured on the the guide sign is the fact that Interstate 65 is four miles to the south. Exits 21 and 23 for 86th Street and 71st Street respectively are to be encountered in the interim. Six beltway travel lanes in this scene as Interstate 465 southbound pulls within 2.25 miles of the northern junction with Interstate 65. Interstate 465 southbound at Exit 20/Interstate 65 south. In just four miles, Interstate 465 intersects Interstate 74. The two Interstates begin a 21 mile overlap at that point. Meanwhile for Interstate 65 motorists, a 17 mile interval separates the north and south junctions. Photo taken by Brian Dowd (11/29/02). |

This mileage sign is posted on Interstate 65 southbound as it departs the western terminus interchange of Interstate 865 (Exit 129). Featured is the first Indianapolis exit at 71st Street (Exit 124) and the north parent junction interchange of Interstate 465 (Exit 123).

This construction sign indicates that westbound Interstate 70 traffic interests to Saint Louis, Missouri should take Interstate 465 south due to construction further south on Interstate 65. Even if construction was not present, motorists should take Interstate 465 south to Interstate 70 west for Saint Louis and other points west! Photo taken by Chris Patriarca (05/26/03). |

Due to the construction further south on Interstate 65, an Alternate Interstate 65 is signed along the Indianapolis Beltway from this interchange southeast to Exit 52B. An end Alternate Interstate 65 shield is posted there.

Split of Interstate 65 and 465 travel lanes at Exit 123 on the Westside. Interstate 65 turns towards the east and enters downtown Indianapolis from the north. On Black Friday, the State Police had Interstate 65 closed at 71st Street (the exit after Interstate 465) due to some brush fires, so they were diverting all traffic off at Interstate 465 north/Exit 123... Then there was a mass exodus off of Interstate 465 at that freeway's 71st Street exit, which explains the dense traffic close to the ramp. Photo taken by Brian Dowd (11/29/02). |
