Interstate 465 Indiana

Routing

Interstate 465 is a complete beltway encircling much of Indianapolis, Indiana. The freeway is mostly suburban, with major widening projects undertaken along the East Side in the late 90s and early 2000s and the West Side (Accelerate465) between 2009-2012. Reconstruction also modernized the roadway in the Park 100 area and the Allisonville / Castleon area, with expansion to eight lanes along portions of the freeway.

A major renumbering occurred in 2002, when its northwest spur, locally known as the Dogleg, was renumbered as Interstate 865. Previously, this connector route was signed as part of Interstate 465, even though the connector route did not lie on the beltway itself.

All non-Interstate routes were removed from within the beltway from the city streets of Indianapolis in the 1980s and 90s. This created a numbering headache, with U.S. 31, 36, 40, 52, 421 and Indiana 37, 67, all sharing pavement at some point with the 53-mile circumferential highway. Overlapped routes are generally not shown with Interstate 465 reassurance shields and instead are posted on guide signs at the entry points for which the US Route or State Road joins the Beltway.

History

Interstate 465 replaced portions of Indiana 100, the original beltway envisioned in the 1950s for Indianapolis, along the East and West Sides of the city. Construction of I-465 began in 1959 with completion of the first segment of freeway in 1961 and total completion by 1970.1 A portion of the original SR 100 beltway remains as the Shadeland Avenue expressway leading north from Exit 48 of Interstate 465 north to Warren Park. This freeway was decommissioned as a state road in 1999.
