Interstate 395 Connecticut / Massachusetts

Routing

Interstate 395 is a long, north-south highway in Connecticut and Massachusetts that leads from Interstate 95 in southeastern Connecticut to Interstate 90/Massachusetts Turnpike near Worcester, Massachusetts. This was formerly part of Connecticut 52.

At Worcester, the freeway changes into Interstate 290 at the interchange with Interstate 90. This marks the northern terminus of Interstate 395 and the western terminus of Interstate 290. There is no direct ramp from Interstate 395 north to Interstate 90; one must use a short section of Massachusetts 12 instead.

Also, Interstate 395 from Interstate 95 to secret Connecticut 695 (signed U.S. 6 East) was part of the Connecticut Turnpike, with the Turnpike ending at the Connecticut/Rhode Island state line on U.S. 6, never built to Providence (later planned as Interstate 84). Connecticut 695, despite its number, is not a planned Interstate 695.

History

Planning for the eventual Interstate 395 began as a new route for Massachusetts 12 in 1965. Redesignated Massachusetts 52 in 1967, work on the freeway began in 1965 at Interstate 90, with completion of the route between Webster southward to the state line by 1968. Building of the road by Eddy Pond however caused problems because of environmental concerns, delaying completion of the Massachusetts portion of the eventual Interstate 395 by 1977. Multi-state route 52 was upgraded to Interstate 395 by 1983.1

The first overhead posted for Interstate 395 (Exit 76) lies ahead of the Exit 75 diamond interchange with U.S. 1 (Boston Post Road). U.S. 1 crosses paths with the freeway at Golden Spur en route to Waterbury and New London. Photo taken 06/26/05.
Interstate 395 northbound leaves via a left-hand exit (Exit 76) en route to Norwich and Plainfield. The Connecticut Turnpike (Gov. John Davis Lodge) Turnpike designation continues northward on Interstate 395 to South Killingly and the unsigned Connecticut 695 spur to U.S. 6 and Rhode Island. Photo taken 06/26/05.
A wye interchange facilitates the movements between Interstates 95 and 395 at Exit 76. Interstate 95 turns east on the six-mile drive to downtown New London and the Thames River bridge. Interstate 395 continues the northeasterly trajectory of the Connecticut Turnpike 16 miles to Norwich. Photo taken 06/26/05.
Traffic partitions between Interstate 395 north and Interstate 95 north (east). Interstate 395 travels through eastern Connecticut 28 miles to Plainfield (pop. 2,638) and 46 miles to Putnam. Interstate 95 travels east 60 miles to Providence, Rhode Island. Photo taken 06/26/05.

Interstate 395 northbound nears the full-cloverleaf interchange with U.S. 20 (Washington Street) at Exits 6A/B. Through traffic bound for the transition to Interstate 290 east is advised to move to the left lane to avoid the weaving traffic from the Washington Street ramps. Photo taken 06/28/05.
Exit 6B onto U.S. 20 (Washington Street) westbound departs Interstate 395 northbound three quarters of a mile south of the transition to Interstate 290 east. Exit 7 constitutes the connection to Interstate 90 (Mass Pike) from Interstate 395 northbound by way of Massachusetts 12 (Southbridge Street) south. Massachusetts 12 sees an on-ramp to Interstate 90 after its intersection with Oxford Street west of Interstates 290 & 395. Photo taken 06/28/05.
A left-hand on-ramp merges onto Interstate 395 northbound from the Massachusetts Turnpike toll plaza (Exit 10). A pair of end signs reside at the merge that usher the transition from Interstate 395 north to Interstate 290 east. Interstate 290 splits from Interstate 190 11 miles to the north. Exit 7 departs Interstate 290 eastbound for the connection to Interstate 90 (Mass Pike) by way of Massachusetts 12 (Southbridge Street) south. Massachusetts 12 merges with U.S. 20 through West Auburn. Interstate 290 meanwhile continues north alongside Massachusetts 12 seven miles into downtown Worcester. Photo taken 06/28/05.

Advisory signage for the switch from Interstate 290 west to Interstate 395 south is in place before the freeway reaches the Interstate 90/Massachusetts Turnpike interchange. A similar sign can be found on Interstate 395 northbound. Other instances in the Interstate system where two routes terminate at the same location include Interstate 195 and 495 at Wareham, Massachusetts and Interstates 64, 264, and 664 at Suffolk, Virginia. The last Interstate 290 westbound exit - Exit 7 for Interstate 90/Massachusetts Turnpike & Massachusetts 12 (Southbridge Street). The exit numbering convention of Interstate 395 continues the Interstate 290 numbers to avoid motorist confusion. Exit 6B for U.S. 20 (Washington Street) westward is 700 feet to the south and is the second of three ramps to serve the town of Auburn. Photo taken 06/28/05.
A directional ramp departs Interstate 290 westbound for Interstate 90 & Massachusetts 12. Pictured here is the ramp split for Southbridge Street north from the roadway bound for the Mass Pike. The exit is the last before the toll plaza. Photo taken 06/28/05.
