Interstate 395 Connecticut/Massachusetts

Routing

Interstate 395 is a long, north-south highway in Connecticut and Massachusetts that leads from Interstate 95 in southeastern Connecticut to Interstate 90/Massachusetts Turnpike near Worcester, Massachusetts. This was formerly part of Connecticut 52.

At Worcester, the freeway changes into Interstate 290 at the interchange with Interstate 90. This marks the northern terminus of Interstate 395 and the western terminus of Interstate 290. There is no direct ramp from Interstate 395 north to Interstate 90; one must use a short section of Massachusetts 12 instead.

Also, Interstate 395 from Interstate 95 to secret Connecticut 695 (signed U.S. 6 East) was part of the Connecticut Turnpike, with the Turnpike ending at the Connecticut/Rhode Island state line on U.S. 6, never built to Providence (later planned as Interstate 84). Connecticut 695, despite its number, is not a planned Interstate 695.

Interstate 395 northbound leaves via a left-hand exit (Exit 76) en route to Norwich and Plainfield. The Connecticut Turnpike (Gov. Exit 6B onto U.S. 20 (Washington Street) westbound departs Interstate 395 northbound three quarters of a mile south of the transition to Interstate 290 east. Exit 7 constitutes the connection to Interstate 90 (Mass Pike) from Interstate 395 northbound by way of Massachusetts 12 (Southbridge Street) south. Advisory signage for the switch from Interstate 290 west to Interstate 395 south is in place before the freeway reaches the Interstate 90/Massachusetts Turnpike interchange. A similar sign can be found on Interstate 395 northbound. Other instances in the Interstate system where two routes terminate at the same location include Interstate 195 and 495 at Wareham, Massachusetts and Interstates 64, 264, and 664 at Suffolk, Virginia. The last Interstate 290 westbound exit - Exit 7 for Interstate 90/Massachusetts Turnpike & Massachusetts 12 (Southbridge Street). The exit numbering convention of Interstate 395 continues the Interstate 290 numbers to avoid motorist confusion. After passing through the Mass Pike toll plaza (Exit 10), drivers partition into the respective ramps for Interstate 90 east and west. Interstate 90 next meets U.S. 20 & Massachusetts 146 to the east and Interstate 84 to the west. Drivers pass through the Exit 10 toll plaza and quickly encounter a partial-cloverleaf interchange with Massachusetts 12 (Southbridge Street). Massachusetts 12 provides a direct connection to U.S. 20 (Southbridge Road) through West Auburn, Charlton, and Sturrbridge. Next to depart is the loop ramp onto Massachusetts 12 (Southbridge Street) northbound to downtown Auburn and Worcester. Exit 10 leaves Interstate 90 (Mass Pike) westbound for Interstate 290 east, Interstate 395 south, and Massachusetts 12 to U.S. 20. Interstate 395 heads 53 miles southwest to Norwich, Connecticut, and 67 miles to junction Interstate 95 near New London.
