Interstate 264 Kentucky

 

Routing

Interstate 264 provides an alternative to Interstate 64 in the Louisville, Kentucky, metropolitan area via the Shawnee Expressway (west of U.S. 31W) and the Henry Watterson Expressway (east of Dixie Highway).

History

Named because it runs through the Shawnee neighborhood of Louisville, the Shawnee Expressway opened to traffic in 1970. The Watterson Expressway, named after Henry Watterson, a journalist and editor of the local paper, began as a stretch of freeway between Dixie Highway and Shelbyville Road in 1948. Completion of the route to Interstate 71 followed by 1974.

The final mainline interchange of Interstate 264 is at U.S. 42/Exit 22 at Northfield and Winding Falls. U.S. 42 is known as Brownsfield Road as it travels northward from downtown Louisville to Prospect and ultimately Covington. The terminus interchange with Interstate 71 is in one mile.
