Interstate 195 Maryland

Routing

Interstate 195 in Maryland is a short freeway linking Interstate 95 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway with Baltimore-Washington International Airport. For years this freeway sat in two segments, one from the airport to Maryland 295 (Maryland 46), the other from Interstate 95 to the north (Maryland 166). When the two segments were united, Interstate 195 was christened.

Southbound Interstate 195 signage begins near the junction of Maryland 166/372 intersection. Along Interstate 195 northbound, End signage exists at the Interstate 95 interchange.

History

The gap between Maryland 166 (opened in 1971) and Maryland 46 was filled with Interstate 195 in June 1990.1

Perspective from Interstate 195 east
Interstate 195 eastbound at the Interstate 95 directional interchange. Although an end Interstate 195 shield for westbound is posted at this interchange, signage along westbound would have one believe Interstate 195 east begins one mile to the north at Maryland 166. A button copy sign for Interstate 695 southbound is in place at the departure of Exit 49A of Interstate 95 south. The same sign bridge features the two mile guide sign for the northern terminus of Interstate 195 at Exit 47A. Photo taken by Andy Field (06/02/03).
The next southbound interchange of Interstate 95 beyond the Baltimore Beltway is Exits 47B/A for Interstate 195 west and Maryland 166 north. Photo taken by Andy Field (06/02/03).

The final mainline interchange of Interstate 195 east is Exit 1B/A for Maryland 170. All trucks must depart Interstate 195 at this junction as the freeway enters the Baltimore-Washington International Airport terminal beyond Maryland 170. Photo taken by Andy Field (06/02/03).
Traffic merging onto Interstate 195 east from the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, auxiliary signage for satellite facilities of Baltimore-Washington International Airport is posted. Photo taken by Andy Field (06/02/03).
Interstate 195 eastbound at Exit 1B for Maryland 170 southbound. Maryland 170 southbound skirts the western boundary of the airport as it travels toward Severn and Odenton. The state route sees interchanges with the Maryland 100 and 32 freeways on its trek. Photo taken by Andy Field (06/02/03).
Signage for the last exit on Interstate 195 south before the roadway enters Baltimore-Washington International Airport. No End sign was in place, but the speed limit did drop to 35 miles per hour after this interchange. Interesting enough, after reviewing a 1993 video on Interstate 195 Eastbound at Baltimore-Washington International Airport, a Interstate 195 shield was posted further East of this interchange. This signage may or may not still be in place. Top photo taken by Alex Nitzman (06/00); bottom photo taken by Andy Field (06/02/03).
Exit 1A gore point on Interstate 195 eastbound. Traffic continuing to the terminal will eventually loop around and emerge back on Interstate 195 westbound. Photo taken by Andy Field (06/02/03).
Perspective from Maryland 170 north
Northbound Maryland 170 at the Interstate 195 interchange. Signs for the roadway entering Baltimore-Washington International Airport did not indicate it as being Interstate 195, so therefore this is considered the southern (eastern) terminus. Photo taken by Alex Nitzman (06/00).
