Jackson, MS - 1979

Interstate 220 opened to traffic north from U.S. 49 to I-55 – 1979 AAA Map of Jackson, MS

Numbered as Route A20, the freeway loop around Jackson was the lone entry submitted to the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO) by the Mississippi State Highway Department on April 4, 1958. AASHO indicated that the route should be 220 on August 29, 1958, and suggested 420, 620 or 820 if 220 conflicted with an existing route number in the state. With no issues, I-220 was approved by AASHO on November 10, 1958.

All of Interstate 220 was opened to traffic by 1981.1 Construction completed in Spring 2004 added a diamond interchange (Exit 3) with Industrial Drive between Clinton Boulevard (Exit 2) and the north split with U.S. 49 at Medgar Evers Boulevard (Exit 5). The $13.4 million project included the addition of auxiliary lanes along I-220 between Exits 2 and 5. The exchange reduced truck traffic and congestion on area local roads by providing direct freeway access for Hawkins Field Airport (HKS) and Hawkins Field Industrial Complex.2
