Interstate 470 Ohio/West Virginia

Routing

Interstate 470 in Ohio and West Virginia provides a bypass around the Wheeling, West Virginia, metropolitan area. It is a better route for through traffic than Interstate 70, which provides direct service to downtown Wheeling. The route also provides a bypass for trucking interests that may be prohibited through the Wheeling Tunnel of Interstate 70.

Western Terminus - Interstate 70 - near Blaine, Ohio

After the Mall Road/Banfield Road interchange (Exit 218), the next exit is Interstate 470, the Wheeling bypass. Unlike the eastern terminus, the exit for Interstate 470 is a right-hand exit. Photo taken 10/15/04.
To the east of St. Clairsville, Interstate 70 encounters the split with Interstate 470 for the south bypass of Wheeling, West Virginia. Exit 219 is signed with the control city of Bellaire for Ohio 7 along the Ohio River and Washington, Pennsylvania for the Interstate 70 continuation to Interstate 79 in the Commonweatlh. Interstate 470 and Interstate 70 split here at this sign bridge. The next exit is for U.S. 40, which departs Interstate 70 for the original National Road at Exit 220, one quarter mile after the split of Interstate 70 with Interstate 470. The federal route parallels Interstate 70 before rejoining to cross the Ohio River into Wheeling. Westbound Interstate 70 reaches Exit 5A, Interstate 470 west (through route to Ohio). Interstate 470 avoids the Interstate 70 tunnel and Ohio River Bridge. The tunnel can be difficult during high traffic volume periods due to the fact that mainline Interstate 70 narrows to one lane.
