Interstate 391 Massachusetts

Routing

Interstate 391 follows the Connecticut River from Springfield to Holyoke. While it crosses the Connecticut near Holyoke, for most of its route it is on the eastern side of the Connecticut River. Its parent, Interstate 91, is on the western side of the river.

Southern Terminus - Interstate 91 - Springfield, Massachusetts

Interstate 391 travels south across the Connecticut River into Chicopee from Holyoke. The freeway leaves the interchange with Massachusetts 141 (Grattan Street) and quickly encounters the two-mile overhead for junction Interstate 91 (Exits 1A/B). Interstate 391 passes underneath Interstate 90 (Massachusetts Turnpike) with no direct access. The freeway interchanges with Massachusetts 116 (Chicopee Street) just south of the crossing at Exit 3. Traffic on Interstate 391 splits between Interstate 91 north and south at the final interchange (Exits 1A/1B). Interstate 91 northbound does a U-turn for Interstate 391 motorists and thus is given the control point of West Springfield for the Exit 13 interchange of U.S. 5 one mile to the west. After crossing the Connecticut River, Interstate 91 turns from an eastward orientation to the south. Interstate 391 ties into this right angle, stemming from the north and Chicopee.
