Interstate 277 North Carolina

Routing

Interstate 277 is the short inner loop located around downtown Charlotte, connecting to Interstate 77 and U.S. 21 to the east in a tight arc. The freeway encircles the downtown area. The northern terminus is a stack interchange between Interstate 277 and Interstate 77. The freeway continuing northwest from this point as North Carolina 16, and it connects to Interstate 85. U.S. 74 multiplexes from the southern terminus to about halfway north on Interstate 77 before leaving the freeway en route to Independence Boulevard.

Nearing Interstate 277/U.S. 74 east and North Carolina 160 (Exit 9) on Interstate 77/U.S. 21 southbound. Direct access to U.S. 29/North Carolina 27 is only available to southbound motorists. The off-ramp to Interstate 277 and U.S. 74 east also connects to North Carolina 160/West Boulevard and U.S. 74 west/Wilkinson Boulevard. This scenario is the case because the ramp begins a collector/distributor roadway system. Interstate 277 prepares to switch over to North Carolina 16 as the Brookshire Freeway enters the Interstate 77 interchange. Although some maps shown North Carolina 16/Brookshire Boulevard as a full freeway, there are at-grade intersections between Interstate 77 and Interstate 85. This mileage sign provides the distance to the next three upcoming exits sign on Interstate 77/U.S. 21 southbound, 0.75 miles north of the Brookshire Freeway. Now on the collector-distributor lanes for Exit 11, the right lane connects to North Carolina 16 west and the left lane connects to Interstate 277 east. The first Interstate 277 exit to the southeast connects with U.S. 29 at Exit 4. North Carolina 16 follows Interstate 277 southward to Exit 2.
